Artist Statement
My journey as an artist has always been about storytelling, unearthing narratives that shape our identities and illuminating voices that often go unheard. Growing up in Ghana, I was fascinated by images that spoke without words, photographs and films that carried history, memory, and emotion in a way nothing else could. I began with filmmaking, drawn to the power of moving images, but over time, my artistic path expanded into Afrocentric artistic photography and conceptual film.
I am inspired by artists like Gordon Parks, Bill Viola, Hank Willis Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems, visionaries who use their art to shift perspectives and evoke deep emotions. Studying for my Master of Arts in Film and Television at Falmouth University allowed me to refine my approach, blending photography, moving images, and symbolism into my own distinct storytelling language.
For me, nature and symbolism are more than just artistic elements, they are voices. My work explores African identity, resilience, colonial scars, and the evolving complexities of the modern world. Clothing, posture, and environmental elements in my images serve as coded messages, bridging the past and present. I seek to create visuals that initially draw viewers in with their beauty but, upon closer inspection, reveal intricate layers of history, struggle, and triumph.
Afrocentric storytelling is at the core of my practice, but my vision extends beyond the confines of a single narrative. I believe in the universal power of storytelling to transcend borders and foster connection. Whether through themes of migration, cultural identity, or social justice, my goal is to create work that makes people pause, rethink, and engage in meaningful dialogue.
In today’s world, images hold immense power, they shape the way we see ourselves and each other. Through my photography and moving images, I strive to challenge perceptions and inspire new ways of seeing. My art is my activism, a catalyst for change and a bridge between generations. By amplifying underrepresented voices and challenging dominant narratives, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and conscious world, one image, one story at a time.
