Curated under the timeless and intimate theme of Portrait, this exhibition at the Glasgow Gallery of Photography explored the human face as a vessel for history, identity, emotion, and truth. Artists were invited to push the boundaries of what a portrait can be, not just representation, but revelation.
My contribution to this exhibition was Bound By Labor, a photographic portrait of endurance.
This piece features a female figure dressed in worn servant attire, her face marked by exhaustion. Behind her stands a welded sculpture, an amalgamation of axes, cutlasses, and chains, symbolizing the brutal tools of labour and their historical weight. Together, they form a visual testament to the burdens women bear across time and space.
But this isn’t just a portrait of a person. It’s a portrait of power. Of struggle. Of quiet strength. A portrait of generations that have carried systems on their backs and yet remained standing.
In the context of this exhibition, Bound By Labor refused to be passive. It looked back. It spoke without moving its lips. It asked viewers to not just see, but to witness.
For me, this piece is a confrontation with history and a tribute to resilience. It is also a call: to recognize the invisible labour, the unpaid strength, and the overlooked heroes woven into our societies.
